| Deus sive Natura is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of science, the study of religion, and the defense of scientific and religious freedoms. Spinoza coined the phrase 'God or Nature' to refer to his notion that God and Nature are two different names for the same infinite and eternal substance but that they distinguish different aspects of that substance; God refers to the sacred aspect and Nature to the material aspect. The formulation allows one of the ways in which science and religion can be reconciled; both the truth revealed through religion and the truth discovered through science offer complementary insights into the same real and divine substance. By treating all religions as having in common their own glimpse of the sacred, the organization commits itself to the promotion of religious tolerance and understanding among those of different faiths. Above all, it sees the freedom of inquiry, both scientific and religious as a sacred birthright, never to be abridged. |
